Top 5 Aging Problems in Cats and preventative advice by our expert Veterinarian, Dr. Janice:

As cats age they experience changes in their health.  As the guardian of an older cat, it is important to understand the most common illness and conditions that affect geriatric felines.

Here is my list of the top 5 common senior cat problems and what you can do for these conditions:
  1. Kidney Disease
This is a biggie! Most cats over the age of 12 suffer from some form of kidney disease.  Many times by the time they show clinical signs, the kidney is already damaged. Routine blood and urine tests can pick this up early. There are many excellent holistic treatments to help manage kidney disease in older cats. The  Kidney Support Gold is excellent. See below for pet wellbeing recommendations!
  2. Obesity
A large number of older cats have weight issues. It is important to make sure they still get exercise and eat properly.  Your veterinarian should be able to counsel you on this. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. See below for Pet wellbeing’s Blood Sugar Gold.
  3. Dental disease
Older cats frequently have tartar, broken teeth, or infected gums.  Dental disease can lead to kidney problems, heart problems and liver abscesses.  These must be addressed by proper cleaning and home care. I also now recommend Pet Wellbeing’s Healthy gums.
  4.  Diabetes

This is particularly common in obese older cats. Cats who have diabetes may need insulin or simply dietary management. Blood Sugar Gold is excellent  to help support your cat for this condition, but not a substitute for insulin.

5.  Hyperthyroidism
This occurs frequently in older cats as a result of an overactive thyroid gland. It can lead to heart disease in older cats.  There are many conventional and holistic treatments for this condition. The thyroid condition can be treated with Thyroid Support Gold or a pharmaceutical.

Also recommended for heart disease, one of my favourite herbal remedies – Young at Heart  to help your cat’s cardiovascular system stay healthy.
