Next month, a 43-year-old woman will celebrate her eighth wedding anniversary, only she isn’t married to a man or a woman.

11th Time’s A Charm

Ireland’s Wilhelmina Morgan Callaghan is the owner of 11 dogs, which include Chihuahuas, Schnauzers, and one Yorkshire Terrier, Henry.

“We all get along – most of the time – but there can be arguments,” Callaghan told the Daily Record.

She adopted Henry in 2009 from a friend with a litter of Terriers. The two fell in love around the same time Callaghan read an article about people marrying their pets.

“I saw something on the internet and I thought it would be wonderful,” she said.

With a friend acting as a witness, Callaghan and Henry married via a website that produced a marriage certificate.

Unconditional Love When It Mattered Most

It is not legal to marry a pet, so the partnership is purely spiritual. But Callaghan takes the union very seriously, especially following a series of crises not too long ago.

She lost her job in 2010 and her house flooded shortly after.

“It was such a stressful time. But Henry, loyal like he is, was great,” Callaghan recalled. “He’s been there for me more than any men have ever been.”

She described Henry as a fan of “cuddles, food and television” who is “kind, friendly and easy.”

He is also the peacemaker among her large clan of dogs, often reducing the tension in stressful situations.

“If a new dog enters the fold, Henry is the first to go over and say hello. There’s no ego, he is just so friendly,” Callaghan said. “People may think I’m barking mad, but he’s perfect for me.”

Callaghan even wrote a song for Henry that she often sings to make him come over. Her nickname for him is “Ri,” which apparently translates to “King” in ancient Gaelic.

Dogs > Men?

Many other people have apparently married their pets online, Callaghan discovered in the aforementioned Internet article. One woman is currently married to her two cats while another felt her snake was Mr. Right.

It’s unclear what sort of romantic relationships Callaghan had prior to her marriage to Henry but she’s probably not the only female dog owner who believes dogs are far better partners than men.

“Unlike other marriages which fall apart, I know I’m with Henry for life,” she added.

Actually, there is one man Callaghan thought of who could potentially compare to Henry but sadly, Gregory Peck has been dead since 2003.

Callaghan and Henry, whose full name on the marriage certificate is “Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan,” will celebrate their anniversary on November 20.
