 Description

There are two types of adrenal gland dysfunctions. Cushing's disease and Addison's disease.

What is Cushing’s Disease?

Cushing's disease is commonly caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland. The result is an over production of adrenal gland hormones. Steroid-induced Cushing’s is also very prevalent today. Long term use of corticosteroids can cause this condition. Usually it is caused by prednisone injections for arthritis. Symptoms of Cushing’s disease can sometimes be stopped, or reduce if the steroids are stopped, but a lot of the time the damage is permanent.

What is cat Addison’s Disease?

Addison’s disease, also known as hypoadrenocortism is a very rare type of adrenal gland dysfunction in cats. The most common cause of Addison’s is brought on by the destruction of the adrenal gland tissue by the cat’s own immune system, or is commonly caused by the long term use of corticosteroids. Addison’s is very hard to diagnose and is rare, especially in cats. Weakness and vomiting can be signs, but the only way to truly tell it is Addison’s is to test for adrenal hormone levels.

Common symptoms of Cushing's and Addison's Disease

  • Weight gain
  • Increased appetite
  • Increased water intake
  • Skin and bladder infections

These symptoms closely resemble kidney disease or diabetes so it can be easily misdiagnosed.

Feline Supraglan works to normalize the production of adrenal gland hormones.
