What is Feline Diabetes Mellitus?
Diabetes is caused by the failure of the pancreas to release enough insulin into the bloodstream. Without sufficient insulin, sugars build up rather than enter the body’s tissues where they provide energy. (This is why diabetic cats tend to be lethargic.)
This build up of sugar in the bloodstream can lead to a host of other conditions, including liver, kidney and heart disease, increased infections, slow healing, eye problems, etc.
Risk factors include:
- Obesity
- Poor diet
- Cortisone treatments
- Stress and shock
Diabetes is more common in:
- Male cats generally
- Neutered males especially
- Unspayed females
- Overweight cats
- Middle-aged and older cats
Common Symptoms of Cat Diabetes Mellitus include:
- Increased thirst leading to frequent urination
- Weight loss
- Weakness, lethargy
- Depression
- Signs of pain in the abdomen
- Sudden blindness
Diagnosing and treating Cat Diabetes
A veterinarian can detect cat diabetes mellitus by high levels of sugar in the blood and glucose in the urine. If you suspect your cat has diabetes, you should take her to the vet.
Recommended treatment includes a healthy, high fiber diet, fed in small amounts several times a day. This helps the cat’s body to stabilize insulin levels, and also helps your cat lose weight, which is important. Conventional treatment may also include regular injections of insulin.
Can herbal remedies help treat cat diabetes?
Several studies have shown that a carefully selected combination of herbal extracts – such as those in Feline Mellit – can:
- Prevent diabetes from developing, and
- Keep it under control in cats that already have it
The herbs in Feline Mellit act directly on blood sugar levels to help control cat diabetes. It is highly effective when used alone, or as part of a comprehensive treatment program.
Our customers have the last word…
I'm so happy to see that you stress prevention and overall health, rather than just popping pills. According to my vet, my cat was at high risk for diabetes, but through a changed diet and use of your fabulous herbal product, Mellit, he’s completely turned around. We'll definitely be ordering more.” Robert, Guelph Ont.

My cat Vinny has had diabetes for years. I give him regular insulin shots, but he still seemed sick and tired all the time. After a few weeks on Feline Mellit, he picked up noticeably. With the vet’s approval, I cut down on his insulin, and now he’s better than ever. Thank you so much for making such a great product.” Lori, NYC
