Description
There are two types of adrenal gland dysfunctions. Cushing's disease and Addison's disease.
What is Cushin's Disease
Cushing's disease is commonly caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland. The result is an over production of adrenal gland hormones. Steroid-induced Cushing's is also very prevalent today. Long term use of corticosteroids can cause this condition. Usually it is caused by prednisone injections for arthritis. Symptoms of Cushing's disease can sometimes be stopped, or reduce if the steroids are stopped, but a lot of the time the damage is permanent.
What is cat Addison's Disease?
Addison's disease, also known as hypoadrenocortism is a very rare type of adrenal gland dysfunction in cats. The most common cause of Addison's is brought on by the destruction of the adrenal gland tissue by the cat’s own immune system, or is commonly caused by the long term use of corticosteroids. Addison's is very hard to diagnose and is rare, especially in cats. Weakness and vomiting can be signs, but the only way to truly tell it is Addison's is to test for adrenal hormone levels.
Common symptoms of Cushing's and Addison's Disease
- Weight gain
- Increased appetite
- Increased water intake
- Skin and bladder infections
These symptoms closely resemble kidney disease or diabetes so it can be easily misdiagnosed.
Feline Supraglan works to normalize the production of adrenal gland hormones.

Comments about NHV Supraglan for Cat Adrenal Glands Dysfunction:
There is no drug currently being used for adrenal hyperplasia that is safe to use in the cat. I have found that Supraglan provides my patients relief from most clinical signs secondary to hyperplasia. It has no effect of adrenal tumors. I also use Supraglan in combination with Mellitus and Resthyro. I have found that the combination is more effective in lowering the T4 and blood glucose.

Question:
My cat, Zipper, has had continuing low potassium levels for the past 6 months despite being put on a potassium supplement. My vet now believes his low potassium levels may be caused by a hormonal issue and is looking into the test to determine that. I'm researching natural products that may help, if that is the case, and considering this one. However, Zipper has a level 2 heart murmur. Would it be wise to bypass this product because of the heart murmur?Asked on 11/18/2011 by Renee from Reading, PA1 answer
Answer:
Supraglan is a supplement we'd recommend if Zipper has been diagnosed as having an adrenal gland dysfunction, as the ingredients in this formula target the pituitary and adrenal gland directly to regulate the hormonal secretions associated to a dysfunction of the glands. As for Zipper's level 2 heart murmur, Supraglan is not recommended to be given to a pet that has a known cardiovascular condition due to the licorice presence in the formulae. However, the 11 mg of licorice per 1 mL portion is a relatively low concentration. I'd recommend consulting with your veterinarian regarding licorice and her heart murmur to see if it is advisable to try the product.Answered on 11/19/2011 by Anonymous
