Description
What is Anxiety and Aggression in Dogs?
Dog aggression can occur for a variety of reasons and can be frustrating and stressful for the owner.
Does your dog react negatively towards some people and not others? Some dogs will single out men, children or those with a certain characteristic such as men with beards, or people wearing hats. This can be the result of negative experiences when your dog was a puppy. Men and children also tend to evoke more aggressive behavior in dogs because they themselves display more aggressive behavior.
Common Symptoms of Dog Anxiety and Aggression in Dogs
- Altered behavior only when you, the owner, are not present
- Distress vocalization (barking, howling)
- Destructiveness (chewing furniture, digging, scratching) and self-trauma
- Inappropriate elimination (urinary or fecal)
Some dog breeds are naturally more aggressive than others and some dogs may display aggressive behavior as the result of fear because they have had little exposure to other dogs or people.
Sometimes dogs are simply aggressive because they are in discomfort or pain, so it is always best to first have your dog checked by your veterinarian, especially if canine aggression is an unusual characteristic for your four-legged friend.
Behavioral treatments for dog aggression or anxiety
If you can identify what frightens your dog, you can help him overcome his fear by gradually introducing that person/item from a distance when your dog is in a relaxed mood. As he becomes more comfortable and remains calm, increase the frequency and proximity of the person/item that frightens him.
For example, if your dog is afraid of men, have a male friend stand at a distance from your relaxed dog. If the dog remains calm, reward him with a treat. Have your friend step close to your dog. If the dog remains calm, reward him again. If the dog becomes negatively aroused, have your friend step back to the original distance. Repeat this exercise until your dog is confident enough to accept a treat from your friend’s open hand.

Comments about NHV Matricalm for Dog Aggression:
Matricalm has worked wonders with my 3 year old mixed breed dog with anxiety and aggression issues, but has had little or no effect on my Parson Russell Terrier's anxiety. I would recommend trying it and giving it 3-4 weeks to have a real effect.

Question:
My dog has seizures usually triggered by barking at other dogs. She gets really agitated. Would this help to prevent seizures? Thank you. I am using a homeopathic seizure medicine and an herbal seizure med but she began having seizures again after being seizure free for 11 months. Thank youAsked on 11/23/2011 by marilyn from prospect, Virginia1 answer
Answer:
Our Matricalm is not specifically formulated to help prevent seizures. However, if barking and overall hyperactivity is the reason for your pet's seizures it may help in calming anxiety and excitability therefore decreasing or preventing the seizures from occurring.
There are also ingredients within the supplement that can help stop heart palpitations, relaxes spasms, relieves pain and regulates the nervous system.Answered on 11/23/2011 by Anonymous
