Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease
Natural support for liver disease and liver detox in dogs
A healthy liver is important for dogs because it detoxifies any chemicals
or pesticides they may be exposed to, toxins in food they scavenge, and
chemical prescription drugs.
Canine Milk Thistle is essential for dogs with liver disease, and for dogs on medication for:
- heart worm prevention
- steroids
- pain and anti-inflammatory medications
No known side effects: gentle for long-term use
1 bottle is a 2-month supply
—Dale
Description
Advice from Dr. Patricia Jordan, Veterinarian
The liver is essential for health, because it performs dozens of different functions in the body, including clearing out toxins. Yet liver disease (including cirrhosis) is one of the most common health problems in older dogs. It can damage all functions of the dog’s liver, with very harmful effects on
their health.
Even dogs without liver disease may need support to detox prescription medications, which are often damaging to the liver. Milk Thistle is an excellent way for the liver to deal with this toxic load of medications., It is not contraindicated to any conventional medication and it is gentle enough for long-term use.
While the Milk Thistle sold in health stores is usually alcohol based and should not be given to dogs. PetWellbeing's Canine Milk Thistle is glycerine-based and safe for dogs.
Milk Thistle should be administered to every dog taking liver taxing medications and especially if the liver is damaged or diseased.
The active ingredients in Canine Milk Thistle are known collectively as silymarin.
These ingredients:
- Help maintain the health of your dog’s liver.
- Scavenge for harmful free radicals.
- Help guard against toxins trying to bind to the dog’s liver.
- Support the stability of liver membranes
Milk Thistle provides excellent health support when your dog isn't feeling well, to support his liver and help his recovery. As an anti-oxidant, silymarin is even more effective than vitamin E. It also helps support the production of new liver cells in dogs.
Milk Thistle is a especially useful health support when your dog is being treated with things like:
- anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) and corticosteroids (Prednisone)
- chemotherapy drugs
- Cyclosporine (Atopica)
- Actigal
- Imuran (Anathioprine)
- Phenobarbital for seizures
- trimethoprim/sulfa antibiotics
- daily heartworm medications
An all natural herbal product, milk thistle is gentle enough for long-term use.
Healthy Tip from Dr. Jordan
Processed foods stress your dog’s liver as it attempts to detoxify the preservatives and other chemicals. Go organic! Avoid grains and focus on healthy proteins from free-range grass-fed animals. Green foods will help detoxify your dog’s liver. Expect your dog’s moods to be lifted as well!

“My dog Bingo has had a bad liver for a while now, probably from polluted water. We tried quite a few things to get him back to health but nothing seemed to work. Our vet is great and does everything he can. We decided to try something that wasn't full of chemicals, so went on the internet looking for a natural supplement. Luckily, we landed on your site and found Milk Thistle. It was within our price range, so we got it. The results were really great. Bingo reacted well to it, his liver condition has gradually improved and he has more energy than he has had for ages! Thank you for your help”
Katie in New Orleans, LA

"My dog, George is so much better on it. I really think that the Milk Thistle has helped with that immensely. He has never had the appetite that he now has. He is a runt sheltie and I used to have to almost beg him to eat; to hand feed him. He now relishes his meals and loves treats as well. He now is a slim 13 + lbs. Shelties normally weigh between 20 - 25 lbs. He is doing GREAT! I'm so glad I found you online!"

I am just AMAZED!!!! If you are like me...and say oh of course they are going to say it works! I am really hard to convince that something really works like they say it does....BOY WAS I WRONG THIS TIME!!! My 9 yr old Yorkie (which is my baby with fur) he is my life. Since he has been 1 1/2 he has had multiple problems beyond I think any dog. I have spent seriously 24,000.00 in vet and hospital bills! Everyone telling me I was crazy! I just could not let him go! I just recently took him to the emergency vet because he was gasping for air and his stomach was blown up so big I thought it would pop. After keeping him at the hospital overnight the Internal Medicine DR. told me he was very sorry but he probably only had 2 days to a week to live. He was at the very end stage of liver failure. He was so limp, not eating. He could not even stand to go the bathroom I had to hold him up. I cried so much, I couldn't eat or sleep and missed work. I was a wreck...this dog is my baby! He was at the end stages of liver failure with approx. 15% of his liver only working. He said there was absolutely nothing he could do, I even asked him if he could get a liver transplant and he said no they don't do it for animals. He actually said I should think of just putting him down but I couldn't. So I had a Dr. appt. for myself and had told him how stressed I was and what the sistuation was and he said you may want to try Milk Thistle, we suggest it to humans when they have liver problems. So as soon a I got home I got on the computer and found this site to get Milk Thistle and I had them ship it to me overnight. I am so shocked!! I am serious when I say this, within in 3 days he started to spark up and I was shocked. As days were going by he has getting better and better each day. I took him back to my vet and he was in shocked and said in the 30 year he has been a vet he has never seen any dog bounce back from the stage my dog was at. It has been a month now and my dog is still here and he is doing all the stuff a normal dog would do...he runs, plays with his toys and we go for our walks. This was truly a miracle I seen right before my eyes. I never usually write reviews either but I thought I may give another dog lover hope if they had a dog that was as bad as mine. Thank you so much Petwellbeing for bringing my baby back to life with your Milk Thistle!!!

My 9 1/2 yr. mini schnauzer Disney developed liver disease a little over a year ago. He has had quite a few episodes of poor appetite, vomiting and lethargy. We have had a battery of tests performed and spent thousands in medications and hospitalization for severe episodes and testing. Milk Thistle was my last resort and figured I would give it a shot. It was easy to administer but unfortunately it didn't work for him. After being on it for well over a month, his liver counts are higher than ever. I'm not sure if the Milk Thistle caused the raise in his liver enzyme count or not, but suffice it to say, it didn't work.

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
I really don't know what it is about this stuff. My dog suddenly stopped eating in Dec 2011. We went to the Vet after a couple of days and they took some blood and poked around a little. They said that her liver seemed enlarged and we would wait and see what the blood work said. It came back and the test said both her liver and kidney's had abnormal readings. I don't know the exact readings but they said there were multiple enzymes out of whack. He told me it never turns out good with these readings and she has lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks! Well, she has been getting progressively more ill and I took her to a different Vet. She has been on the Milk Thistle for about 3 weeks and guess what? Ya, the levels are back in the normal range!! So you can do the math, it really seams like it really made a difference. They do think that she may have LymphoSarcoma and no it is time to try the ES Clear and see if it has the same effect.

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
I love this product. Easy to use, no pills. My dog stands there and let's me feed her this product. My dog is a 14 year old springer spaniel with liver, and kidney problems. I started giving her this product in October and three months later her latest blood tests were almost back to normal. I did not expect her to still be here, but I truly believe these products are the reason she is. I would recommend this product to every pet owner that has a dog with liver disease.

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
I add the correct amount of drops according to the dogs weight directly on the food and it tastes good so the dog likes it. It is very convenient to use and I apply this twice a day to the food. I feel it has saved my dogs life at age 9. My dog was diagnosed with liver disease at the age of 9 and she was in pretty bad shape and did not look happy. She now enjoys life and feels well and has a very glossy coat. She has just celebrated her 10th birthday and life is good for her. I give thanks to my caring vet guiding me to this product.

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
my chocolate labrador was sent home after being treated for severe liver and kidney failure. We were devastated since we love our dogs and consider them part of the family. None of us have the heart to put her to sleep and fortunately we started her on milk thistle right after since we encountered your website while looking for a possible cure for our lovely dog. She has gained some weight and she walks more, she still has a moderate swollen belly but we are still positive and continue giving her your products. Thank you for your help, we really appreciate having our labrador getting better

My senior dachsund has Cushings, and I am on her second round of Supraglan plus Hearty Heart and Milk Thistle. The vet is very happy with her progress- she is active and playful, and her weight is increasing, which has been difficult to maintain. Her liver enzymes have stabilized and her enlarged heart is working well.

My 10 yr. old chihuahua had liver enzyme levels around 2800 and after changing his diet as well as several other things I added 12 drops 2x day of Milk Thistle to his regimen and after appx. 4 weeks of use his liver enzyme level has dropped to around 1200. He is still under the care of his vet but we are continuing the milk thistle daily and expect enzyme levels to continue to drop. I am certain if we hadn't added milk thistle to his regimen he wouldn't be with us anymore!

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
I have already written a review for this product months ago when our cocker spaniel Lucy was on the road to a complete recovery
due to this product. When she started taking this product she had been on Clavamox and Baytril for 2 1/2 months. She started taking
the antibiotics as the result of her having bacterial hepatitis.
Her ALT and ALP values were off the charts, both being over 1400.
In 1 1/2 months the antibiotics brought the ALT down to 545 and the ALP down to about 450. After another month of the antibiotics
alone they were still the same. After taking this product along with the antibiotics for about 6 weeks her ALT was 175 (118 is high normal)and her ALP was 95 (131 is high normal). At the time
the vet and us were both happy with this result but it only got
better. We were told to give the antibiotics for 2 more weeks then just the milk thistle for another 2 weeks. My wife, myself,
and the vet were very happy with her next blood work. Her ALT was
75 and her ALP was 48, both well into the normal range. We finally have our Lucy back to 100% and full of energy. The vet
instructed us to keep her on this product for the rest of her life. We also give this product to our 7 year old cocker
Lilo. There are no side affects, at least none with our dogs.
Thank you for this lifesaving product.

My 12 year old lab has cancer and during her chemotherapy treatments her liver function starting to become a concern. The vet provided supplements ($100.00/month) I decided to use the Milk Thistle supplement instead. Great result. Her liver function came back to normal range. This is great product for pets undergoing cancer treatments.

Comments about NHV Milk Thistle for Dog Liver Disease:
I believe that this product was very instrumental in saving my dog's life. My Havanese has a liver problem that nearly caused her death. After administering milk thistle along with diet modification and another antioxidant, she is getting better every day. I attribute her new energy and improving liver enzymes to the use of this product. My vet has also been impressed with her continuing recovery. She loves it, so it is easy to administer. She is a small dog and has had not side-effects to milk thistle. Highly recommend this product for dogs with liver problems.

I have a 17-1/2 yr old shihtzu. She has been on dexamethasone for about 3-1/2 yrs (every other day). This drug is very hard on the liver. I give her milk thistle for dogs every morning and evening over her food. It is very easy to do and I feel it has helped protect and support her liver allowing her to continue with the meds for this long. I am never without it. This complany is unbelievably fast in service. I order 2 btls at a time. Her 13-1/2 yr old brother also gets it. Highly recommend to anyone who has a pet with liver issues or meds that are toxic to the liver.

I have a 11 year old female Lab. She has taken Phenobarbital for seizures for years. Of course, it affected her liver. Her liver enzymes kept climbing, even with taking Denamarin. I was so frustrated so I checked for anything that would help. I found this website and thought I had nothing to lose. After on month on milk thistle, her enzymes dropped 840 points. I put the drops on her food in the morning and evening. Needless to say, I was very happy. I recommended it to a friend whose dog has liver issues. I hope it works as well as it did for me.

My dog is 12 years old she had been to the vet many times. Although the medicine I was given at the vet was helping, it was not enough and she was so very sick. Her liver was shutting down and she was wasting away to nothing. I came across this website and read the reviews, I thought why not. I had to do something! She was only given a few more weeks to live! I am so glad I tried the milk thistle it is wonderful! She is better every day!

My vet recommended Denamarin for my dog's elevated liver enzymes. After $100's of dollars and months of trying, it had no effect. I read about Milk Thistle and since taking it, her liver enzymes are finally on the decline. I could not be any happier!! This stuff is effective, no side effects, easy to use (just add to her food), and a miracle!! Love it!!

Question:
My 12 yr old has a grossly enlarged liver resulting in years of pheobarbital and potassium bromide for seizures. I no longer give her these meds as they didn't really seem to lessen the severity or frequency of her seizures. I have started her on a strict diet of fish and veggies and have also started her on Milk Thistle. My question is, will this program actually help to bring her liver down in size?Asked on 1/29/2012 by Anonymous from Calimesa, Ca.1 answer
Answer:
Milk thistle is an antioxidant, hepatoprotective and hepatorestorative, or a substance that both protects and restores your liver health and function. MIlk thistle may be helpful in treating many liver conditions, including hepatomegaly, hepatitis, fatty liver and liver cirrhosis. We could not guarantee that it would in fact shrink the liver size but would certainly assist in overall liver function.Answered on 1/30/2012 by Mgr Customer Care from CSR Office
Question:
can i give the milk thistle the same day as the heartworm preventative? i just wanted to be sure it would not lessen the HW preventatives effectiveness. (my dog is also on steroids and has been on antibiotics - these are my reasons for wanting to put him on milk thistle. I had planned on 5 days on 2 days off for 4-5 wks then w/a break. does this product sound like a good choice for him)
thanksAsked on 1/28/2012 by Anonymous from north carolina1 answer
Answer:
Yes, Milk Thistle can be used alongside with heartworm preventative product's without any known contraindications; thus, it should not affect the effectiveness of the heartworm preventative. Milk Thistle is highly recommended if your pet has any known liver ailments or if they are on medications/drugs (such as the steroids and antibiotics) as they do cause stress on the body and especially the liver which is the site of metabolism of these drugs.Answered on 2/1/2012 by Linda
Question:
I have a 20lb French Bulldog with a known food and topical allergy to rosemary extract, leaf, and oil. She also has environmental allergies which require her to be on a very low daily dose of prednisolone. Do you think if she has an allergy to rosemary she could possibly be allergic to milk thistle? I have to be very careful with herbs. Thank you very much, Lisa.Asked on 1/28/2012 by Lisa from Southington, CT1 answer
Answer:
It is hard to say as both are all natural ingredients. It is very rare for pets to have an allergy to the Milk Thistle. Generally even pets with very severe allergies to not react to the supplement. Please keep in mind if you do decide to try our supplement we back it up with a 90 day return policy: http://www.petwellbeing.com/pwb/guaranteeAnswered on 1/30/2012 by Coreena

Answer:
The Milk Thistle can be helpful for supporting the liver and maintaining enzyme levels. Keep in mind that this supplement is all natural and can take time to be absorbed into your pet's system. Results can generally be seen anywhere within the 2 to 6 week mark.Answered on 1/30/2012 by Coreena

Question:
I have a 15 year old beagle/poodle mix. He weighs 32 pounds. He has been on Denamarin for a few months, but his ALT and Alkaline Phosphatase numbers keep climbing. His ALT went from 301 to 317 in a 2 week period and his Alkaline Phosphatase went from 471 to 547. He had only been on the Milk Thistle for one week prior to his last labwork. Is it okay to do the Milk Thistle along with the Denamarin and should I give him the Milk Thistle 1 hour prior to eating the special hepatic food prescribed by the vet, like I do the Denamarin? How long do you think it will take before I will see a drop in his numbers?Asked on 1/24/2012 by Debbie from Wilmington, NC1 answer
Answer:
It is safe to use the Milk Thistle in conjunction with the Denamarin, it may help to decrease his levels. You are welcome to either spread out the dosage or give the two at the same time. As Milk Thistle is all natural it may take 2 to 6 weeks to see results however I would suggest getting him tested every 3 to 4 weeks.Answered on 1/25/2012 by Coreena
Question:
My male cocker, 10yrs. old was diagnosed with a mass in his stomache affecting his liver. They say it is inoperable. Would Milk thistle help him. He will not take the Vetri liver support treatment that the Vet recommended.Asked on 1/23/2012 by Anonymous from Lewisville, Texas1 answer
Answer:
Milk Thistle is formulated to help regenerate damaged liver cells as well as guard against toxins trying to bind to your pet's liver. I would suggest using this supplement in conjunction with ES Clear: http://www.petwellbeing.com/products/dog-cancer -- This supplement can be helpful for decreasing tumors or stopping them from growing further. It also contains ingredients that can help eliminate toxins and supports the function of the other organs.Answered on 1/24/2012 by Coreena

Yes, you are welcome to give the Milk Thistle in conjunction with the Denamarin. Our supplement is all liquid, the dosage is 1 droplet for every 2 pounds of body weight.Answered on 1/24/2012 by Coreena
Question:
i have a 22lb dashound...with some liver condition..levels was high everything else looked normal.but the vet put her on denamarin 225 mg for 1 mos and then another blood test was levels was lower. Had me to continue with denamarin for another month and her levels went back up. Did a test to make sure she didn't have cushing disease and it was negative. So we are back to square one. Vet suggest Ultra sound to see is any tumors could be the reason of high levels. She is still taking Denamarin found your web site and was wondering if I can give her Milk thistle with the Denamarin or should the milk thistle be giving alone???
ThanksAsked on 1/22/2012 by Anna from Nicholasville KY1 answer
Answer:
You are welcome to use the Milk Thistle in conjunction with the Denamarian to give additional support to your pet's liver. Our Milk Thistle can also help to regenerate damaged liver cells.Answered on 1/26/2012 by Coreena
Question:
I have a chihuahua mix 5 mo. old puppy. I think she may have eaten 1 of my iron tablets(45mg). She threw up quite a lot of yellow stuff. She didn't eat for 24 hours. But she seems fine now. Eating and drinking normally. Would milk thistle be safe to give her just to be on the safe side?Asked on 1/20/2012 by memaw26 from PA1 answer
Answer:
If your dog is eating and drinking normally, her bowel and urine output look normal, and she's otherwise acting normal, it's probably nothing to worry about. Most pets throw up bile once and while due to hunger, stomach upset, etc. You are welcome to use the Milk Thistle for overall liver health but at this time it is not necessary. If you are concerned I would suggest printing the ingredients and consult with your vet.Answered on 1/26/2012 by Coreena
