My rottie has periodic bouts of itching and chewing that are not hot spots. While this ointment has some effect it is probably too mild for her problem. The vet usually recommends steroids, which certainly work, but I don't like to use them unless absolutely necessary. I would recommend the product conditionally.

Light emollient with healing herbs, so useful, soothing for almost any skin issue, wound or irritation. Very effective for alleviating/minimizing callouses on elbows, which get chapped/peely/itchy even out here in the pacific northwest during winter.

Translating from French for my neighbours who bought this product: our dog has ongoing issues with fungus infections & mushrooms in her ears and on her bum.
Application of this cream saw results in as little as 3-4 days! The mushrooms shrank & disappeared, immediately alleviating the constant pain and irritation she suffered on a daily basis. She is now happier and experiencing much less discomfort, and actually welcomes us when we go to put on the cream, when before she used to cower and cringe when it came to treatment time.
Clearly this product has had an immediate and positive effect on our dog, her health & her mental state (being less irritable due to being in less pain). Highly recommended!!

Our dog had a wound from a boarding kennel and it had taken a while to heal up. It was mostly healed but when I put this on, the skin became nice and soft. I also put it on his flaky skin and it worked very well.

Our older dog has a spot on his legs that he won't leave alone. This seems to help when I notice him licking. It must calm his skin down soon because he relaxes more and quits licking.

Great product. Have miniature schnauzer (sp?) that developed severe itching problem. He would scratch and rub his skin raw. This product helped sooth open sores until I discovered his food was causing the problem. Made it through that ordeal with the help of this salve.

Finally, a product that actually stops the itching of rash caused by alergies, heat rash and insect bite. Tried all sorts of creams and lotions, that didn't work. Both my friends would chew themselves raw! At one point they were "living" with e-collars to avoid infections from chewing themselves. Now both are very happy. No more e-collars, no more chewing, no more itching!!!

Comments about Pet Wellbeing Itchy Owie Ointment for dog paws and skin:
I'm sure this salve works well for ordinary skin problems, but it did nothing for my dog Star. She is under a vet's care for seasonal allergies, but I was hoping the salve would bring some relief. Vet's meds and shampoo are working for now, but as soon as we stop, the problem seems chronic.

Description
What is Itchy Owie Ointment?
Itchy Owie is all natural and effective. It contains 13 holistic ingredients that work to alleviate discomfort, soothe itch and restore the skins health. When our holistic veterinarians developed Itchy Owie, they researched the natural components that have the greatest ability to rehabilitate common types of skin damage experienced by dogs. They also took into consideration that many pets may lick the product once it has been applied. Safety, as well as effectiveness, went into developing this truly remarkable skin product.
What is Itchy Owie used for?
Just like humans, animals are susceptible to insect bites and stings, to lesions and to dry skin. These can all cause unpleasant, even unbearable, itch and/or discomfort. There may be sensitivities to something in the diet or environment that can cause reactions on the skin of your dog. While every effort and precaution is taken to remove potential causes of our pets discomfort, they also need relief.
A note from our Veterinarian...
Skin problems that persist may be generally considered to arise for many possible reasons:
-
Is your pet exposed to toxic materials?
Common pest control chemicals in the garden, on the lawn or cleaning products in the home may be causing or contributing to a skin problem. Consider substituting more natural products to see if your pets skin health improves. -
Allergies?
Allergic dermatitis is a condition seen routinely by veterinarians. Possible allergens can be pollens from weeds, trees or grasses, molds, dust mites found in homes or fleas. -
Are there other health issues?
Other health conditions such as an underactive thyroid, can have symptoms that show up on the skin. By treating the cause, the secondary skin ailments can be taken care of. A foul odor on the skin is not considered normal and should be examined by a veterinarian. A common cause of smelly skin is yeast infection. Sometimes, reactions to vaccines can exhibit as skin disorders. -
What is your pet eating?
The most common dietary allergens are wheat, dairy corn, soy and egg. Sometimes, though fairly rare, our pets exhibit an allergy or sensitivity to something in their diet by breaking out on the skin, often on the back at the base of the tail. The skin is one of the bodys organs of elimination. If the body is attempting to eliminate an allergen, the skin can become irritated, red and itchy. Assess the quality of the food you are feeding your pet and also potential ingredients that may be a problem. If you suspect your pet has food sensitivities but you can't figure out what they are, it may be helpful to prepare an allergen free diet at home. Batches of food can be made in advance and kept in the fridge or freezer. -
Is your pet bored, frustrated or irritable?
Sometimes, psychologically based issues can cause a pet to scratch. Over scratching can lead to abrasions that can become infected. -
Parasites?
Fleas, mange and ringworm require treatment specific to the type of parasite your pet has. Seek the consultation of your veterinarian for solutions. If your pet has discomfort or parasites such as ear mites in the ears, please see http://www.petwellbeing.com/products/dog-ear-mites Ear Clean Gold and http://www.petwellbeing.com/products/dog-ear-infections Ear Care Gold.

Ingredients
- Extracts of Calendula flower (Calendula officinalis)*: The beautiful orange petals of the Calendula flower are known for their ability to support the skins natural resistance and ability to rejuvenate. Calendula is one of the most appropriate herbs for applying to wounds on the skin and for many types of skin discomfort.
- Plantain leaf (Plantago major)**: This common garden weed is of enormous value for the skin, particularly for the swelling and discomfort normally experienced from bites and stings.
- Marshamallow root (Althea officinale)*: The soothing, demulcent quality of Marshmallow has been shown to help general symptoms on the skin caused by a sensitivity, such as hot spots.
- White Oak bark (Quercus alba)**: Oak bark has the wonderful quality of astringing tissue both internally (in the digestive tract) and externally on the skins surface. It contains tannins that can help with inflammation.
- Yarrow leaf & flower (Achillea millefolium)**: While Yarrow is an herb commonly used internally, it also has many uses for the skin including wounds on the skin or paws' surfaces, swelling, bruising and burns.
- Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)*: Applied externally, Licorice has an amazing capacity to calm patches of inflammation and relieve the discomfort associated with swelling.
- Propolis resin†: Gathered from beehives, Propolis is one of the most effective natural substances for keeping a wound clean and free from infection.
- Aloe Vera juice (Aloe barbadensis)*: Aloe allows the body to regenerate healthy, new skin cells. It is commonly used for burns, wounds, cuts and scrapes.
- Vitamin E Oil (dl-alpha tocopherol acetate) 10%: Vitamin E is a fundamental component of providing the skin with nourishment. It helps to support the skins ability to stay healthy and elastic after abrasions or excessive scratching.
- Evening Primrose Oil: While most of use may be familiar with Evening Primrose Oil for its essential fatty acid content, it is also a valuable ingredient for use externally on the skin, helping with redness and swelling.
Base:
- Fractionated Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils for the skin and one that is well tolerated because it is so gentle. It enhances the skins natural immunity to harmful bacteria, viruses and yeast.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Commonly added to make herbal ointments, Olive oil creates a rich, smooth consistency as well as providing natural components for the skins immunity.
- Beeswax*: A small amount of organic beeswax is heated and slowly added to make an ointment that can be easily applied to the skin, changing a liquid into a solid preparation. Beeswax is mild and safe for general use.
Herbs are *certified organic, **ethically wild-harvested or †selectively imported
