Managing your dog’s allergies can be frustrating. Diagnosing them is tough in and of itself, because allergy symptoms often manifest in similar ways to common illnesses. Once they are diagnosed, keeping them in check can sometimes feel impossible.

Many pet owners try to avoid conventional medicine when managing their pet’s allergies, opting instead to explore alternative medicinal practices. One alternative form of treatment is Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET®). The treatment claims to desensitize both people and animals to allergens such as food, environmental substances, household products and more.

What is NAET?

The NAET method was developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad in 1983. Initially, it was used to treat humans to identify and potentially relieve allergic responses. Later, practitioners realized the treatment could be used on animals, as well, since animal allergies are growing more and more common.

NAET uses a combination of applied kinesiology, chiropractic care, good nutrition and acupuncture to reset the body’s allergic response. It is non-invasive, all-natural and gentle in its methodology.

Like many other forms of alternative medicine, science has not proven that this method works. However, some pet owners have claimed that their dog’s allergies were relieved after following this method.

The NAET method

NAET may be used to both identify allergen sensitivities and relieve them. The first half of the treatment (the identification) utilizes neuromuscular sensitivity testing to identify energy shifts or blockages associated with different allergens.

During this testing, muscular reactions when exposed to a particular allergen indicate a sensitivity or allergy to that allergen. The testing is conducted by holding a glass vial containing water and the “energetic vibration” of an allergen to the pet and testing for muscular weakness. If weakness is identified, the pet is considered to have a sensitivity to that allergen.

The next step is alleviating the sensitivity by removing the energy blockage using various techniques. Typically, the vial containing the allergen will be kept in contact with the dog using a collar-like band. Then, the practitioner will use massage therapy and/or acupuncture or acupressure for around 20 minutes to touch association points along the spine and “open the immune gates.”

Once the treatment has concluded, the neuromuscular sensitivity testing is conducted once again to see if the sensitivity has been reduced. If the treatment was successful, the dog must not come in contact with the allergen for 24 hours.

This technique is supposed to relieve sensitivity to one allergen at a time, and the process may take multiple visits. According to NAET practitioners, more treatments for each allergen may be necessary if your dog has had an allergy to a particular substance for a long time, if it is not in good health or if it does not receive good nutrition.

After one allergy has been alleviated, future visits can attempt to alleviate other allergies. The NAET method aims to desensitize the most important allergies first, such as essential nutrients and major foods.

Benefits of NAET

The proposed major benefit of a successful treatment is a reduction in allergy symptoms, including itchy and bumpy skin, digestive issues and ear infections. The method does not claim to cure allergies in pets, but rather reduce the pet’s sensitivity to them. If sensitivity to allergen has been reduced, your dog may live more comfortably in its surroundings.

Testing many allergens at one time with the NAET technique can also help identify allergies before they become symptomatic and harm your pet. Since allergies can be difficult to spot, this testing technique may be useful in uncovering many sensitivities at once.

Another major benefit is that you won’t be using potentially harmful medications to clear allergy symptoms. NAET is completely natural and gentle, potentially providing a safe and holistic alternative to conventional allergy treatments.

If you’ve tried other allergy relief techniques to no avail, you may consider giving NAET a try. However, you should always consult with your vet beforehand and find a reputable professional to attempt treatment to ensure your pet’s health and safety. There is no guarantee that NAET will work for your pup’s allergies.

Other considerations

If you aren’t totally sold on NAET, you can still use other natural methods to alleviate your dog’s allergy symptoms. Prescription medication is not always required to help your dog remain comfortable.

Natural allergy relief supplements may be helpful in providing allergy relief by minimizing symptoms. These will not cure your dog’s allergies but can make them much more manageable.

Additionally, adding more omega-3 fatty acids to your dog’s diet may help reduce inflammation throughout the body and minimize the symptoms of seasonal, food and other allergies.

If your pet’s allergy symptoms appear unmanageable, and your pet appears to be in distress from its symptoms, consult your vet to find more ways to provide relief.
